He served the Carmi Police Department for 29 years, and this week, he put away his badge. We meet retired Carmi Police Chief Randy Hamblin in this week's Behind the Badge.

Retired Police Chief Randy Hamblin has seen a lot of changes in 29 years. "The internet didn't exist- or in a practical manner for us to use it- it didn't exist in 1985. We weren't computerized, we did hand written reports. Cell phones were not around."

Randy started his job as an officer at the Carmi Police Department in 1985 and not only was he starting a new career, he was also starting a family. "After all these years, 31 years of marriage, 29 of those being a police officer, I can't say enough about my wife."
"Randy's always been close-knit with his family and I think that's one of the good things about him getting to retire now- is maybe he'll get a little more time with them," explains Sheriff Doug Maier.

And that's exactly what he plans on doing. "I want to take care of the little honey-do's that I haven't done in 30 years, that I've been putting off. So hopefully, I can support her the way she's been supporting me."
Randy and his wife Janet have three children and three great grandchildren, and through being a father, grandfather, and helping impact other young people through programs like D.A.R.E., Randy hopes he's left a lasting legacy for years to come.  "If I can be remembered for anything, I would like for people to understand that I've always been fair. They may not understand it, but at the end of the day, I've treated everyone with fairness and respect. And hopefully that's a legacy that will outlive me."

Even though he no longer holds the title of 'chief,' those who worked with him hope to still see him around. "He also still has a family up here that- we're not going to forget him and I don't think he's going to forget us. That's not going to go away," Maier says.
And so we salute outgoing Carmi Police Chief Randy Hamblin for serving his community behind the badge.
