Hundreds gather on the Daviess County court house lawn in Owensboro to hear from political candidates at the Red, White, and Blue Picnic.

More than 20 politicians vying for various federal, state and local offices were at the event. The event attracted hundreds, many of whom came to hear from Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell and Democratic challenger Alison Lundergan Grimes, Kentucky's Secretary of State.

The annual political stump pitted the two candidates against each other in back-to-back speeches.

"My opponent is a new face but she's a new face for the status quo. A new face to vote for Barack Obama. A new face to make Harry Reid the majority leader of the Senate. A new face for no change at all. That's not the direction we want to take in Kentucky for the next six years," said Sen. Mitch McConnell. "Every crazy liberal in the country is sending my opponent money. There is nobody Barack Obama wants to beat worse than Mitch McConnell and there's nothing else I'd like better than for him to have a bad night November 4."

"[Sen. Mitch McConnell] wants to make this race about anyone but me. Trying to tie me to every national figure out there who disagrees with Kentucky's interests. Barack Obama is not on the ballot. I am and I will hold you accountable for your 30 years of failed leadership," said Grimes, who chided the incumbent for "not working for Kentucky."

"We have a senator who proudly calls himself the 'guardian of gridlock' and promise, if re-elected. another government shut down," said Grimes. "You think Washington is out of touch? You want the next six years to be better than the last six years and you want a senator to promise here today not to shut the government down? I invite you join 'team switch'."

Both candidates attracted droves of supporters. The most recent Bluegrass Poll suggests the race is a toss-up, with McConnell carrying a 2-percent lead over Grimes.
