The Poverty Simulation is facilitated by the United Way of Southwestern Indiana and is a tool to help community members explore the many facets of poverty. Participants role-play the lives of low income families. The challenge is to cover all of the major material necessities a family has such as housing, utilities, food, daycare, health care, transportation, clothes and goods – on a limited budget for one month. Reflection and discussion at the end of the simulation makes it a powerful tool for deepening engagement with issues of poverty.
