Chad Bailey worked with his partner at the Newburgh Police Department for 8 years, "He was getting older, he was having some trouble with his hips, it was just time for him to retire." And retirement hasn't been easy, "He would just stand at the front door and want to go to work."
Dogs aren't always man's best friend. At least, not when your name's Rex. Rex is Chad's German Shepherd, his former K-9 partner. When it comes to Chad, Rex always has his back. During Rex's tenure, he helped Chad seize several thousands of dollars of illegal narcotics and assisted in several felony arrests. Chad always dreamed of becoming a police officer, and working with Rex was a way to combine two passions. "I've always had a love for dogs," Chad said.
Chad works to keep drugs off the street, and sometimes puts his life in danger doing it. This type of bravery is typical for Chad, it's just the kind of man he is. "He puts his life on the line every day to keep the peace for other people," his mother, Jacqueline, said.
Although those in Newburgh view Chad as a hero, he says he's the lucky one, "This is the profession that I chose, and I'm honored to serve my community in that capacity."
This week we salute not one but two honorees: Chad and his retired K-9 Rex, serving the town of Newburgh Behind the Badge.
