Some teenagers are apprehensive of police officers, but students in Henderson call this officer a friend.  In this week's Behind the Badge, we meet the Henderson Police Department's Officer of the Month, Robert Gipson.  "I feel this profession is a calling, that you want to help people, and that's why I got into it."

Helping people is what Officer Robert Gipson does every day.  He's the school resource officer at Henderson County High School. "I always get stopped by one of the students, asking about Officer Gipson," Henderson Police Department Public Information Officer Jennifer Richmond says.
Officer Gipson has been with the Henderson Police Department for four years, and got into this career because he wanted to make a positive impact in his community.  "We're not always out there to be the bad figure, we're there to help. They can come to us when they need help."
He alone is in charge of the safety of 2,200 people, and throughout his time as a police officer, he's had some scary situations. "In this profession, you don't take anything for granted, because you never know what the call's going to be. Each call's different. You're thankful to make it home at the end of the day.

A family man, Officer Gipson devotes his time outside of work to his children. "My family is my world." And he still finds time to give back to the community.  Every year, Officer Gipson participates in Guns n' Hoses. He's hopes to be an inspiration to others in his community. "The world we live in is not going to change if you don't start somewhere, and I get to do that on a daily basis."
