Eyewitness News has learned that Evansville City Council President John Friend is calling for the resignation of Stephanie Brinkerhoff-Riley as the Council Vice President. These major developments come on the heels of Brinkerhoff-Riley's controversial recording of an exit conference about the city's 2012 audit with the State Board of Accounts.
Councilman Friend tells Eyewitness News that he had spoken with Councilwoman Brinkerhoff-Riley on Friday. In that conversation, Friend said that he had asked Brinkerhoff-Riley to resign as vice president by Memorial Day. So far, Friend said, that has not happened.
The secret recording of the exit conference and then the dissemination of that recording violated the trust of the Council and the Mayor's Office, according to Friend. Friend said he also worries how the controversy might make the city look to potential businesses looking to bring jobs to the city.
"It's bigger than me, [Brinkerhoff-Riley] and the Council together," Friend said.
Friend said he is in the process of filing the necessary paperwork to call an executive session later this week to address this controversy. At that potential executive session, councilmembers can vote on whether to strip Brinkerhoff-Riley of her powers as vice president, Friend said.
