There is literally a new sheriff in town: David Wedding.

It is current Vanderburgh County Sheriff Eric Williams' last day, and his chief deputy, Wedding, is taking over as we speak. Wedding was sworn in about 11:30 a.m., but officially did not take over until 4 p.m.

Williams stepped down to take an online security job with Old National Bank. It was up to the Democrat Precinct Committee to choose a new sheriff, and Wedding was the only person to sign up.

Former teachers, high school classmates, and members of his family were at the ceremony to support him.

"People from EPD, ISP, all local sheriffs," said Wedding, "just kinda shows we try to have a good working relationship with everyone inside our community and outside our community. That's a sign of a good leader to be given to the people to make things happen."

Wedding had already been campaigning against Lt. Kirk Byram for the office. He had been the chief deputy since Williams became sheriff in 2007.
