Tuesday council members voted to fast track the properties' rezoning by suspending rezoning rules, unanimously pushing through all three readings in one night.
"They're trying to vacate to support the IU Medical School schedule so they need to make a decision of where they're going to go, wherever that is, as quickly as possible," said Debbie Dewey, director of Growth Alliance for Greater Evansville.
While representatives from D-Patrick said the quick rezoning would help their tight timeline, those being forced to vacate rental properties in the potential development area are asking for more time to relocate.
"I understand that you gotta business, you wanna make money, you wanna put cars down, but look at all the lives you're damaging," said Mable Dunbar, who rents a property on South Kerth Avenue. Sections of South Kerth, South New York and East Walnut are affected by the project.
The renters say their landlords gave them until August to get out of their homes. Many of them say that's not enough time, noting they don't have the financial means to pack up and leave that quickly. The developers say they have distributed information to the affected homes detailing where they can find new landlords and new rental properties.
