Fast Response to Replace Wrecked Fire Truck

- Fire departments need everyone, and everything, to respond to emergencies, including fire trucks. But the Yelvington Fire Department in Daviess County was down a fire truck after it was involved in an accident over the weekend.

Firefighters must respond fast and think fast in emergencies.

"No one ever knows when an accident or a fire's going to break out," says Daviess Co. Fire Chief Dwane Smeathers.

When a Yelvington Fire Department truck wrecked Sunday, fire officials had to act fast.

"You never know when you'll need it," Smeathers says.

What the department got was a replacement fire truck moments after the accident happened.  Smeathers says a spare truck was ready to go.

"In a matter of two to three hours," he adds.

It's part of the county's plan to keep all fire departments prepared and ready to respond.  But firefighters did have to add some pieces.

"Actually, the truck didn't have a radio in it. They took the radio out of the old truck. Simple as unplugging and plugging it in to the new truck," he says.

Smeathers says if something happened during the two to three hour window, other departments would respond immediately.

"All the officers, not on the Yelvington Fire Department, but on the Daviess County Fire Department knew that if there was a call that came in that sounded like it needed more than one apparatus, there would have been an automatic second alarm called immediately," says Smeathers.  He adds to buy a replacement truck isn't cheap.  It could cost up hundreds of thousands of dollars to buy a new one
