Evansville firefighters battled an afternoon house fire that shut down part of Pollack Avenue.

It happened around 5:45 in the 4600 block of Pollack, right on the corner of Polster Drive.

A passerby called 911 after seeing flames and smoke coming out of the front of the house. Firefighters had it out in about 20 minutes, but the home is destroyed.

No word if there were any people were hurt. Two dogs died, but one puppy was revived on scene.Firefighters also faced another danger, several snakes inside the home.

Greg Main says, "At this time we had several snakes inside the structure, that becomes a hazard for us when we want to make sure everything is safe for our firefighters as well as for the public, none of the animals or reptiles escape the structure."

All the animals were taken to animal control. The fire department says the cause of the fire is still under investigation.
