PREVIOUS: A deadly virus found in the Middle East has turned up for the first time in the United States.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says a case of the coronavirus known as Middle East Respiratory Syndrome, or MERS, was reported in Indiana. The illness comes from the same group of viruses as the common cold and attacks the respiratory system.
It was first discovered two years ago in the Arabian Peninsula. Saudi Arabian health officials say since then, it has sickened 339 people in their country alone and killed a third of them.
The CDC is working with Indiana State Health officials to investigate the case.
