A somber memorial, honoring a police officer who made the ultimate sacrifice.

The Gibson County Sheriff's Office and Princeton FOP held a ceremony in memory of John R. Officer.

The Chicago Police Department officer grew up in Princeton, but later moved to the windy city where he became one of the few minority officers there at that time.

He was shot and killed April 13th, 1934, by armed gang members who were robbing a shoe store.

Emergency responders and some of the fallen patrolman's family members attended the ceremony.

The ceremony was held at Sand Hill Cemetery in Princeton where John R. Officer was laid to rest back in 1934.

Two of the five gang members involved in the incident were executed that same year.
The other three men served lengthy sentences.
