The incident lasted all but 12 seconds. But the investigation into this weekend's officer-involved shooting will continue for the next several days. The internal EPD investigation is trying to determine whether the Evansville Police officer's use of force was reasonable considering the circumstances.

This happened late Friday night, when the officer shot and wounded a man who allegedly led authorities in a high speed chase on the east side. After the suspect stopped at the HomeLife Studios and Suites on Green River Rd., authorities say the officer fired following a brief verbal exchange.

That officer, whose identity is not being released at this time, has been on paid administrative leave since the shooting. Sgt. Jason Cullum says it's department policy to allow what it calls a 72 hour "decompression period."

"A lot of things may not be forgotten necessarily," said Sgt. Cullum, "but rather may not be recalled following a traumatic event. When you allow for that decompression period, a lot of those things may come back. "

The officer provided an initial statement right after the incident but is expected to provide a formal statement in the coming days.

We're told the suspect is still in the hospital. Police have not  released his name but say he has a "violent criminal history."
