Keeping Pets Calm Amidst the Fireworks

- Fireworks can be very intimidating for some of our pets. The Vanderburgh Humane Society want you to keep that in mind. Humane Society officials say the 4th is not only the most nerve wracking for pets, it's also when a lot of dogs run away because of the noise and lights.

Cyndi Hoon Donley says her golden retriever, Fiona, is a cool customer.

"She's usually very mellow," she says. But when the fireworks heat up, she loses her cool.

"She salivates, she's jumping all over me," Cyndi adds.

"They begin to pant, they begin to pace. Some of them just really behave erratically," says Kendall Paul of the Vanderburgh Humane Society. Paul says runaway reports triple during the 4th of July.  A big reason: dogs being startled by the sights and sounds, and panic.

"There have been dogs that have been known to bust through windows or to bust through screens because their so panicked at the noise and
the lights around them," she says.

Paul adds to help them have a happy 4th, keep your pet inside, away from windows, and make sure they're properly identified. If you head out, leave them at home, and never leave them in a car. Meanwhile, Hoon Donley says she puts a Thundershirt on Fiona, helping her stay cool and unbothered.

"The very first time she wore it, it wasn't as effective, but the more I put it on her, every time she starts getting anxious, it works better and better each time," Hoon Donley adds. "She'll make it through another 4th."

Paul says you should talk with a veterinarian if your pet gets extremely nervous or anxious. She adds they can prescribe medications or sedatives to help calm them.
