We could have an athlete from the Tri-State in the 2016 Summer Games in Rio. Reitz swimmer Lilly King is a serious contender for a spot on Team USA.
King is just a junior at Reitz, she's on the swim team and, oh yeah, she holds the Under 16 world record in the 100 yard breast stroken with a time of 59.67 seconds.
She broke a 14 year old mark by more than two tenths of a second, a big gap in the world of competitive swimming. But she's not done.
The 2016 games are still a ways away, and King's training regimen will doubtlessly increase as she makes her way into a division one college program.
King says she's keeping an eye on the Sochi Winter Games, helping her prepare for the possibility of joining Team USA in Brazil.
King's records speak for themselves, but a spot on the National Team isn't a guarantee, even for the best.
"Just making the team is so hard," says King. "The top two spots make it. Jessica Hardy held the world record and she came in third in the qualifier and didn't make the team, even though she's the world record holder."
So King will continue to work, to perfect her craft. Until she can compete for the chance to show what she can do on the international stage.
