He shared his delicious Apple Crumble Pie recipe with us:

This is a great recipe to learn how to make basic pie dough. They are very simple to prepare and can be used in several ways (as a pastry crust for pot pie, or as a crust for any pie). Also, this recipe includes instructions on how to make a homemade pie filling and crumble topping.

Basic Pie Crust

  • 1 ¼ cup  Flour
  • 2 TSP  Sugar
  • ½ TSP  Salt
  • ½ cup  Butter (chilled and cut into cubes)
  • 3 TBSP  Ice Water

Method of Preparation:

  1. Mix flour, sugar and salt in a food processor.
  2. Add butter and pulse until the flour and butter combine to make a fine crumb.
  3. Gradually add the water until a ball forms.
  4. Remove from the food processor and form into a ball and flatten.
  5. Wrap with plastic wrap and chill for an hour.
  6. Remove from the wrap and roll out into a large circle (large enough to cover the pie pan).
  7. At this point, you will add your pie filling (if making a standard pie with a top and bottom crust, double the recipe to make enough dough to have a top lid. If making a cream pie, bake the crust at 350 just until it starts to brown and remove to fill with custard).

Apple Pie Filling

  • 4 lbs  Apples (peeled, cored and sliced)
  • ¾ cup  Sugar
  • 2 TPSP  Flour
  • 1 TPSP  Cinnamon
  • 1 TSP  Nutmeg
  • 2 TBSP  Lemon Juice
  • 1 TSP  Vanilla Extract

Method of Preparation:

  1. Combine all ingredients in a bowl and mix well to insure each apple is coated with the seasoning.
  2. Pour into a pie crust and top with additional crust or crumb topping.
  3. Bake

Crumb Topping

  • 1 cup  Oats (old fashion style)
  • 2 TBSP  Flour
  • ½ cup  Butter (melted)
  • ½ cup  Brown Sugar

Method of Preparation

  1. Combine all ingredients in a bowl and mix until they start to stick together.
  2. Crumble the topping over the pie filling and bake

Final Method:

  1. With the pie dough rolled out into the bottom of the pie pan, add the apple filling.
  2. Crumble the topping over and bake at 350 for 30-45 minutes.
