122-year-old church celebrates first baptism

After 122 years, Sunday marked a big day for South Friendship General Baptist Church.

“We’re just an old church out in the country,” said pastor Tony Seale Sr.

Finally adding a baptistery of their own.

“It’s really made our church complete,” said Seale.

So why wait all these years to add one? The church’s pastor tells us price was just an excuse.

“People stopped doing what they’ve always done. If you don’t want things to change, just keep doing what you’ve always done. And we’re doing a lot of things different,” said Seale.

Of the church’s 44-member population, five were baptized today.

“It means everything,” said new member Cindy Adler.

Adler experienced two special moments Sunday morning. Being baptized and becoming an official member of the church.

“I’ve always wanted to belong to church just life got in the way and children and work. And I wasn’t as close to god as I wanted to be and felt something missing in my life,” said Adler.

Believing that this small church and the close-knit community is something she’s always felt is right for her.

“My dad and my grandmother both went to little white country churches and when Jennifer showed me the pic of the church I knew that was where I belonged. Exactly where i need to be,” said Adler.
