A Day in the Life of a Firefighter

We see them almost every day around town, firefighters putting their lives on the line, completing dangerous tasks.

Earlier today Eyewitness News Amelia Young participated in the Evansville Fire Department’s second Fire Ops 101 at their training grounds.

Putting her and more than 20 city officials in simulated situations firefighters face all the time.

It was an eye opening, heart pounding experience.

Giving city officials a new perspective when budget times rolls around and the fire department needs new equipment.

So, in order to understand what a day in the life of a firefighter is like, they suited us up and put us in the action.

It was the basics. Enough to let us know what was going on without putting us in harm’s way.

“I was very nervous,” said Missy Mosby, president of Evansville City Council.

Learning how the extraction team cuts out a crash victim from a car, using a tool some call the jaws of life.

Climbing a ladder 40 feet in the air, which some scale up to 100 feet.

“I gotta be honest, I didn’t think it was gonna be quite as difficult as it was,” said president of the Evansville Fire Merit Commission, Ryan Schulz.

Then there was the burn chamber…

“We like to call it controlled chaos,” said Larry Zuber, president of Evansville Professional Firefighters Local 357.

Lugging forty pounds of equipment, I crawled through a dark, smoky container to put out the fire with my team.

One of the most difficult tasks I’ve done in my life.

“I’d do it again, I’d be even more nervous because I know what I’d have to do,” said Mosby.

While it’s everyday work for the firefighters, it was more than challenging for the crowd of over 20.

“We’re one spoke in the wheel of the community. Fire department, police department, water and sewer utility. Communications dispatch. All of those spokes in the wheel provide an opportunity for the community to roll along on a smooth path. If we’re strong the community is strong,” said fire chief Mike Connelly.

Leaving with the experience of a lifetime and an appreciation that could only be gained by stepping into the boots of a hero.
