Citizens Placed Into 'Shoot or Don't Shoot' Scenario

It is a quick decision that many hope they will never have to make, but life or death situations are a reality for Evansville Police Officers.

As the final portion of a ten week Evansville Police Citizens Academy course, everyday citizens got a chance to feel what it is like to make a critical decision.

Students were brought out of the C.K Newsome Community Center to the lawn one at a time. They acted as a police officer dealing with an aggressive man.

In the scenario the man looks to be holding something in his pocket while yelling at the officer. When the man pulls out what is in his pocket --they have just moments to decide whether or not to pull the trigger.

Most citizens did, and were stunned to find that it was just a cell phone in the mans hand.

"We work for the citizens" said EPD Sergeant Steve Kleeman "we are out there to protect them we are transparent if you want to see what we do then we welcome you to come and see us. It is apart of our job to help the community."

The citizens academy has been operating for more than 20 years and have graduated more than one thousand citizens.

The purpose of the course is to show Evansville residents what police experience everyday.

The next class begins in September.
