Close to $3 million awarded to Kentucky AG as part of sexual assault kit initiative

Nearly $3 million has been awarded to the Kentucky Attorney General's Office as part of the National Sexual Assault Kit Initiative (SAKI) grant to seek justice for victims of sexual assault.

Kentucky Attorney General Andy Beshear announced that his office receieved the grant on Wednesday.

Beshear said his office will use the money to establish a sexual assault cold case unit comprised of a victim advocate, investigator, prosecutor, and a SAKI coordinator form the three-year US Department of Justice Bureau of Justice Assistance grant.

The grant totals $2,998,090.

The unit will focus on investigating and prosecuting sexual assaults and providing services to victims.

The grant will also allow the Attorney General to fund an extra Kentucky State Police cold case unit sexual assault detective.

Providing justice for victims of sexual assault and ending the state's sexual assault forensic exam (SAFE) kit backlog have been top priorities for Beshear.

“Let there be no doubt – this issue is not just about ‘kits,’ it’s about seeking justice for victims of sexual assault,” Beshear said. “My office applied for the SAKI grant to create a funding source to ensure the Commonwealth never has a rape kit backlog again and to ensure law enforcement and prosecutors statewide have the support they need to investigate, prosecute and seek justice for these victims.”
