Company Shipping Whisky Barrels by Barge

Nearly 150 barrels of whisky are on their way to Louisiana using a method traditionally done in the 19th century.

The barrels are being shipped by barge Friday from the Owensboro riverport to New Orleans.

They belong to Cane Land, a Baton Rouge-based distillery who stored them at O.Z. Tyler Distillery in Owensboro.

The shipment pays tribute to the path whisky and other spirits were transported on back in the 1800's.

Jonny Verplank with Cane Land says, “Obviously, the logistics are much, much harder than putting it on the truck and taking it down the highway, but it's embracing an old tradition and reviving some of those awesome things in the past.”

Distillery officials say it could take up to two weeks to reach Louisiana.

The whisky should be available in stores this spring.
