Controversy Over Roundabout Plan

This week the Indiana Department of Transportation announced a 1.6 million dollar project to turn the intersection of State Road 66 and County Road 275 West into a roundabout.

INDOT officials say it will slow traffic down and make the intersection safer but not everyone is convinced.

"I believe that putting a roundabout around new drivers will confuse them" said Spencer County Resident Sam Walker "especially in Spencer County. Were not used to roundabouts unless you go to USI everyday and even that one has issues."

Walker has put together a petition online to try and halt construction and it already has nearly 200 signatures.

"I don't think it warrants a 2 million dollar roundabout  when that money could be used for something else more productive in the state" said Walker.

Farmers say they are also concerned about navigating equipment through the roundabout.

"This is a farming community" said farmer Jim Seiler "getting semis through there getting combined through there getting large equipment through there I understand that a roundabout works in a city this is not a city."

Construction is expected to begin in 2020.
