Documentary filmmaker invited to speak during 2017 Diversity Lecture Series

The Evansville Celebration of Diversity Lecture Series Board of Directors is pleased to announce internationally renowned Chinese American documentary filmmaker, author, poet, educator and master diversity trainer Lee Mun Wah as the 2017 Diversity Lecture Series distinguished guest speaker.

The lecture, entitled, “Standing Up for Social Justice in Times of Fear and Hatred,” will take place on Tuesday evening at 6:30, at the Ivy Tech Community College Vectren Auditorium, located at 3501 N. First Avenue, in Evansville.

Wah will offer his unique experiences and training as a community therapist and folkteller to bring people from various backgrounds together to stand up against hatred and work toward a more equitable and just community.

Lee Mun Wah will train individuals to confront racial and social justice issues using "Mindful Facilitation Techniques" that are culturally responsive and sensitive to the needs and issues of all community members.

Participants will be encouraged to share personal stories and practice culturally sensitive responses while learning how to be stronger and more effective when confronting prejudice and racism.

Special sessions specifically for educators and business leaders will stress the importance of cultural competency as more people from various cultures and geographic areas attend school and enter the workforce.

"Many of the issues we face today are increasingly complex as our community continues to grow in diversity," said Evansville Mayor Lloyd Winnecke. "That is why I believe it is imperative that our citizens, first, more fully understand the intricacy of these issues and, second, have the skills necessary to discuss them in culturally-sensitive ways that build bridges among people from different backgrounds."

Diversity Lecture Series President Danyelle Granger added, "Through his workshops and lectures, Lee Mun Wan will help our community grow in its awareness and appreciation of the diverse characteristics that make us all unique. I encourage everyone to attend the workshops."

Lee Mun Wah began his career as a resource specialists and counselor for one of the largest school districts in California.

After 25 years in the public school system, he became a private schools consultant working with students with severe learning and behavioral issues.

Through his company, Stirfry Seminars & Consulting, Lee Mun Wah offers cross-cultural communications awareness and conflict mediation techniques to educational institutions, social service agencies, corporations and government.
