Original Story

An early morning fire at Ashley Court Apartments on Evansville's east side caused many residents to quickly evacuate. While there was damage, everyone is safe.

The first started after 2 a.m. on Thursday with many nearby residents saying they heard an explosion and then saw flames.

At least 40 firefighters spent much of the morning working to douse the flames.

Part of the eastbound Lloyd Expressway was closed near Harrison High School because so many fire trucks and ambulances were on scene.

The fire department reports that six apartments were involved and approximately 20 individuals were displaced. There were no injuries.

The fire is under investigation and the cause has not been determined.
