Electric Car Owners Paying Fees in New Gas Tax Law

Indiana has placed a $150 fee on electric vehicles along with $50 for hybrids.

It's part of the state's new gas tax which went into effect on July 1.

Drivers who own electric cars to save money will now end up spending more each year.

However, electric car owner Chad Greenwood tells Eyewitness News he still believes the benefits outweigh the new tax:

"I don't think it turns me off from the whole electric car thing. It's so much fun to drive. There's so much pickup. It runs so well and I can charge at home. Not having to go to the gas station is really nice. Not having to worry about 'Oh, I don't have any gas, I can't make it to work tomorrow,' that kind of stuff. "

INDOT will use the fees to fix state roads and bridges.

State transportation officials say it will cost $1.2 billion a year for the next 20 years.
