EPD details timeline of Sunday shootings

Police believe this was a domestic violence situation

On Monday, Evansville Police held a press conference surrounding Sunday's shootings where police say Daniel Sears shot Maygen Sears near E Franklin and Linwood and then shot Richard Popp near Morgan Ave. and Highway 41. Authorities said they found Daniel Sears dead in a vehicle at the 4-H Center shortly after.

Police say they believe the shooting was a domestic violence situation.

Sgt. Jason Cullum said there was a brief history of issues between Daniel and Maygen.

Back on January 11, Maygen filed a police report alleging intimidation by Daniel.

That report was used to apply for and receive a temporary restraining order on January 11. It was served to Daniel on January 19.

Over the next few weeks, police said there were three reports that Daniel violated a restraining order.

However, Sears was not able to be taken into custody due to those reports.

On February 11, there was a report filed based on Daniel's alleged behavior the night before. Before officers were able to locate him, the situation began to unfold on Linwood.

A second hearing for the protective order was set to occur on Monday.

There was nothing in the order that prohibited Daniel from possessing a firearm. He was a licensed firearm carrier, according to EPD.

Police do not feel anyone else was involved in the shooting Sunday.

They believe Daniel only targeted Maygen Sears and Richard Popp. All those individuals knew each other, according to police.

On February 10, Richard Popp was on scene of the incident. Police said they believe Maygen and Daniel were in the process of a divorce.

Timeline of events

In the press conference, police detailed the timeline of events.

Sunday morning, about 10:52 a.m., the shots fired report was made from Linwood. Police said they also received information at that time that a woman had been shot in the 700 block of E Franklin St. This address is near the corner of Linwood and E Franklin. One of the callers identified the shooter as Daniel Sears, according to police, and that he may be driving a black Range Rover.

Officers found Maygen Sears dead outside of the E Franklin address when they arrived.

About that same time, police received a shots fired call near Highway 41 and Morgan. The caller reported the vehicle involved in the shooting was a black Range Rover. Shots were reportedly fired into a blue Dodge Challenger.

Police said the Challenger continued traveling until it left the roadway and came to a rest against a fence.

Officers were then asked to be on the lookout for Daniel Sears and the black Range Rover.

A citizen reported seeing the Range Rover near the Vanderburgh County 4-H Center. Several deputies arrived on scene. A perimeter was set up with the EPD Swat Team and the Bearcat Tactical Vehicle. After about 45 minutes, the SWAT Team approached the vehicle and determined that Daniel Sears was dead inside the vehicle, according to police.
