Area deemed safe after EPD investigates suspicious package

Hazardous device unit took two tries to neutralize it

Update

Evansville Police are investigating a suspicious package found in the bed of a pick up truck parked in a parking lot near the area of 3rd and Cherry.

Police blocked off a two-block radius around the area to traffic and pedestrians as they began their investigation.

The Hazardous Device Unit used a robot to inspect the package but was not able to tell if it was dangerous or not.

Police then disrupted the device in an effort to neutralize the threat which sounded a loud boom throughout downtown.

That disruption though was ineffective. Police then disrupted the device a second time to dismantle it, sounding another loud boom through the area.

Evansville Police say that they do not know exactly what the device is but they will be carefully investigating it to find out.

Police were investigating for more than three hours. Residents in the area were asked to leave their homes and the Select Specialty Hospital across the street was on lock down during the investigation.

All roads are back open and the area is deemed safe.
