Evansville Neighborhood Digs Into Garden Thief

In a place welcome to all, a most unwelcome guest has left their mark.

There may be a serial thief in Evansville and people in the University South neighborhood are keeping an eye on their garden. Over the last month the beauty around the old homes and a church has been disturbed; dug right out of the ground.

Folks at Lutheran Church of our Redeemer may be the first to admit it’s a modest display of yellow and purple petals. They’re not ones to brag. Still, to be violated this way, at their place, it’s hard to make sense of it.

The Bible teaches right from wrong, how to give and receive, respect, and love. But these lessons may have been missed by some.

“It’s just crazy,” says Nicole Martin, who has worked the front desk at the church for 11 years. “I have no idea where these people are coming from.”

Redeemer has plenty of prayers, but it is a few plants they’re missing. It was one month ago when the University neighborhood church noticed a few holes in the back garden.

Brenda White lives next door, and nurtures the neighboring flower bed. “I’ve never had anything stolen,” she says.

Sadly, there's a first for everything.

The bushes aren't expensive. Martin says they only cost about $10 a piece. But the stealing won't stop through the neighborhood, and some have seen sentimental items disappear.

An entire dogwood tree was taken from a woman’s yard most recently. “Everybody's been talking about it,” Martin says, “I don't know.”

The church didn't file a police report. They don't think it’s worth the trouble. If you notice any new plants or trees in your neighborhood, the church asks you let it know.

Inside the walls of the Redeemer church, there is supposed to be honor and respect. It’s clear, on the outside there is still a lot left to learn.

“Sadly, a lot of people just don't think about where it's coming from,” Martin says, “they just take.”
