Evansville Planned Parenthood the Site of Two Protests

People across the country are holding rallies at Planned Parenthood facilities demanding the government defund the organization.

Tri-Staters rally in Evansville as just one of more than 200 nationwide, but they were joined by opposition. A counter protest was standing right there with them.

"Evansville is wonderful and this is part of why," one protester says.

Protests have become a common theme in recent weeks.

Evansville protester Katie Miller says, "This is a democracy everyone should have a voice and today people are sharing that voice. It's a beautiful thing."

Planned Parenthood, the site of two protests Saturday morning.

Sarah Cannon, also a protester from Evansville says, "I'm like geeking out right now because this is wonderful."

It was a mix of opinions and signs. Some protesters calling for Planned Parenthood to be stripped of all federal funding.

Mary Ellen Van Dyke, the Executive Director for  Right to Life Southwest Indiana says, "We are here to raise awareness."

Others in disagreement, showing Planned Parenthood their support. Like Sarah Cannon who organized a Facebook group for the counter protest.

"Our nation is strengthened by civil discourse and peaceful protests and this is like every first amendment geeks dream right now," Cannon says.

Randy Davenport, a protester from Henderson says, "That's the one thing that makes the American different and special is we do have the ability to go out and voice our opinions."

The protest, a peaceful one for the most part. But agree or disagree, some say this is a moment they are proud to be an American.

"We have like two completely opposite opinions and we're all peacefully expressing them," Cannon says. "We all have the right to do so because we are Americans."

Whether you stand on the left or right side of the street, it's no doubt these Americans are proud to be Tri-Staters.

"I'm proud of Evansville because there's a good showing on both sides," Miller says. "I hope that this changes lives in positive ways."
