Evansville, Vanderburgh County Put Community Crossing Grant to Good Use

Driving, its something we do everyday, but thanks to nearly one million dollars in Community Crossing grant money going to Vanderburgh County and Evansville combined, that task may soon be easier.

Community Crossing, a branch of Next Level Indiana, gave millions of dollars to several Indiana cities and counties this year, as Governor Eric Holcomb announced the recipients in Jasper Wednesday.

The state program aimed at matching local government funds on proposed county and city road projects is putting locals in the drivers seat.

Community Crossing matched Vanderburgh County's investment into local projects as much as fifty percent.

John Stoll, Vanderburgh County Engineer, says the money will go a long way.

"It helps out quite a bit because in the recent years the local road money has not been very high, and now with the recent changes, like the gas tax and Community Crossing fund it has opened the door for the county to get more money to put into local roads,” said Stoll.

Vanderburgh County says they plan on using the funds to repave Boonville New Harmony Road between I-69 and Green River Road.

They expect construction to begin in just a couple short weeks.

Stoll says the county also plans on replacing a small bridge off Saint Joseph Avenue just north of Mill Road as well further down the road.

City of Evansville Engineer, Brent Schmitt says the city plans on focusing their funds on patching, milling, and overlaying a stretch of Green River Road, between Washington Avenue and Bellemeade Avenue.

Derian Boswell of Evansville travels Green River Road everyday and says hes happy to hear about a possible change.

"The manhole covers, I and my friend both have run over them and popped a tire on them, if we can just somehow make it smoother, not so much of a deep hole that would be a lot better,” said Boswell.

They also plan on resurfacing Burkhardt Road between Columbia Street and Morgan Avenue, and Maryland Street from St. Joseph Avenue to Fulton Avenue.
