Family of Alex Phebus Reacts to His Death

The family of a Madisonville man killed in a stabbing last night speaks out.

Alex Phebus died after he was stabbed at least once on West Arch Street.

The suspect, Jaleen Spivey, charged with murder. He was arraigned this morning on the charge.

"I had to see where my son died," said Mark Phebus, Alex's father. "That's why I had to be here."

He says Alex worked in construction. Fixing roofs. Trimming trees.

"That was the plan, for my kids to take over the family business some day," Mark says.

When he learned his son died after being stabbed thursday night, his heart sank.

"It's something we'll never get over," says Mark. "Everybody loved Alex. He was the town clown. He joked and cut-up, and he was super intelligent. And he was religious."

Hopkins County Coroner Dennis Mayfield said Phebus died of a stab wound in the upper torso.  Madisonville Police say he was able to identify his alleged attacker, Jaleen Spivey, before his death.  A woman in a nearby home called 911 after hearing Alex's plea for help.

"She saw the man run behind the church and she opened the front door because she saw other one laying on the ground. She was like, 'Do I need to call somebody?' He's like, "'Yes, call somebody I've been stabbed, call 911,'" says Crissana Gibson, whose sister-in-law called 911 after discovering Phebus being stabbed.

Police say they're still putting together the timeline leading up to the stabbing, looking for others who may have seen or heard something.

"That's a broad blanket we're casting out. If you have knowledge about their relationship, or lack there of, we want to hear from you," says Maj. Robert Carter of the Madisonville Police Dept.

Phebus believes his alleged attacker was an acquaintance of his son. As his family grieves, and waits, he knows others will remember alex.

"Everybody in town knew Alex and I want them to keep him in their prayers because he didn't deserve this," says Mark.
