Hancock Co. Schools Start Cleaning Following High Illness Reports

Halls of Hancock County Schools are silent today and tomorrow due to a high number of students reported sick.

Strep throat and the flu, two of the reasons. Custodians started disinfecting the schools for the start of classes next Monday.

On what was supposed to be a busy Thursday at Hancock County High School, custodians got busy cleaning and disinfecting.

"We decided just in the interest of our students and health and faculty's health and the community's health," says Kyle Estes, Hancock Co. School Superintendent.

"It's been going from family to family and, you know, everybody being as close as we are, having it go to a closed environment at school, it spread pretty quick," adds Dan Curry of Lewisport.

Estes says more than 80 of the high school's 530 students were sick wednesday. Attendance rates were dropping below 90%, leading to classes and other school activities to be cancelled. Officials in other districts in Daviess and Ohio Counties say they're not seeing as many cases so far.

"Thursday was when we began seeing a lot of kids that were going home and that trend has kind of continued, and we felt like, 'O.K., let's just call it quits for the time being,'" Estes recalled.

Estes said the decision was made to prevent students from passing flu and strep throat and other viruses to each other.  Custodians started cleaning chairs, tables, and other high contact areas. To disinfect Hancock County High School and other schools, custodians will be using products like Re-Juv-Nal, which is a hospital-grade disinfectant, sanitation wipes, and other products.

Estes says the closings will let the cleaning be more effective as students return to these halls next Monday.

"The more we can keep individuals sequestered, allow them to recover and pass that gestation period, the better off we will be," Estes says.
