Henderson NAACP Chapter Reactivated

Black History Month is coming to an end, but a local chapter is just beginning.

A Henderson native has reactivated the local NAACP chapter, and chapter that hasn't been activated for six years.

Deborah Jackson Hoda, President of the Henderson NAACP says, "Most people think that there's nothing that goes on in small town America but the same things happen here like they do in Chicago and Los Angeles so on and so forth."

Hoda was born right here in Henderson.

"In our community we had that feeling of family and coming back to see that there is no family unity that was something I really wanted to to work upon and get back into our system," Hoda says.

After spending several years moving around the country, she's back in town. But she notices something was different.

"I was trying to find some place around here where I could stand in front of a historical black history locations and they're all gone," Hoda says.

So what better timing than Black History Month for her to reactivate the Henderson NAACP.

"It doesn't matter about the color of your skin," Hoda says. "It's just if things are not going right as far as your rights then you should be aware of how you can overcome that or where you can go to make sure you can get those."

Some of her goals, to create a sense of family and unity and to share some history.

"I do remember the days of having to go and sit the movie theater where it says colored upstairs white downstairs or the water fountains that said white and color only these kids don't see that so they're like 'Oh its old time that never happened,' yes it did yes it did," Hoda says.

Amidst a history lesson and learning about rights, Hoda just wants to bring some of what she learned back to her hometown roots.

"Being able to have a place to go and be with their peers it gives them a sense of self esteem and also a sense of being part of the community," Hoda says.

The group will meet again on March 20th at the Henderson Public Library.
