Kaci Wood's Hometown Reacts to Maxwell McMain Sentencing

The sentence of Maxwell McMain for his role in the death of Webster County teenager Kaci Wood drawing strong reaction in her home town of Sebree.

McMain was sentenced yesterday to ten years in prison after pleading guilty to manslaughter.

It's been more than a year since Kaci Wood's death left her home town in mourning. Yet the opinions and reactions to Maxwell McMain's sentencing are still fresh in the minds of her friends, family, and neighbors a day after he was sentenced.

"I was a little disappointed in the sentencing," says Ann Mitchell, who adds she knows the Wood family. She believes McMain deserved more time behind bars. Mitchell says time has yet to heal all the wounds more than a year after her death.

"It's still hard to talk about it. And the girls, the two sisters are having a tough, tough time. I understand that," Mitchell says. "They were a tight family."

McMain pleaded guilty to manslaughter and other charges last month for driving the vehicle he and Wood were in when it wrecked outside of Morganfield. Some residents say ten years isn't long enough, citing his past drunk driving charges.

"If it was my kid, I would say if you take a life, then you get life in prison as well," says Amber Pool of Sebree.

In the days following her death last June, Sebree honored her memory with ribbons and signs across town.  Other softball teams wore ribbons in their hair in state softball tournaments last year.  While some of those signs are no longer there, the memories, and stories about Kaci, have not gone away.

"People still talk about her. People still wear the sweatshirt with her name and the angel wings. My granddaughter was a close friend, played ball with her, and she still talks about her. She's going to always be around," Mitchell says.

McMain was originally charged with murder, kidnapping and wanton endangerment last year for his role in Wood's death.
