Kenergy Customers Push Back on Bills

Hundreds file into the Henderson County fairgrounds Wednesday, as a rally point to compile evidence they hope will help bring higher electric bills back down to earth.

Some say their power bills are hundreds more than normal. Now Kentucky lawmakers are jumping in to ask for answers.

Hundreds aren't lined up for peanuts and popcorn, only papers and petitions. They crammed in the fairground concession stand to sign their name and make a copy of their February bill.

“One year it jumped 300 bucks,” says Sammie Dukes.

Kenergy customers say their bills have spiked suddenly and they hope a stack of complaints sends a message to the power provider.

“The electric bill,” says one man waiting for a copy, “it’s way out of whack.”

Dukes’ wife, Darlene says their January bill was $574. “I’m hoping they take notice and come back down to a livable price,” he says.

State Representatives Robby Mills and Suzanne Miles and State Senator Dorsey Ridley have sent their own message to the Kentucky Public Service Commission asking the body to consider why customer bills have increased.

They hope the third-party group can rebuild trust with Kenergy and confirm the cause of the spike.

Kenergy was not at Wednesday’s meeting. Officials said the format and timing wasn’t suitable to address customer needs.

Officials say increases stem from winter weather and depletion of a credit fund to offset a 2014 increase.

Spokesperson Renee Jones says another factor could be a billing gap, where some customers are being billed for more than a month of service.

No matter the reason, people still worry what next month’s statement has in store.

“Are you going to pay the electric bill or buy food or pay rent?”
