Living the Dream to 'Light the Night'

Garvin Park is decorated with millions of tiny bulbs, for the annual Ritzy's Fantasy of Lights but Wednesday in Evansville, it's hundreds of runners who are stealing the show.

The first-ever “Light the Night” run marks the holiday season, where we're reminded how we have a lot to be thankful for. The lights adorning Evansville are a sign of holiday cheer.

But also, it's the birthplace of a dream.

“There's so much negative in the world right now and it takes one person,” says Rhonda Trail.

To better the city.

“I think we all need to make a difference and I want to make a big difference in Evansville,” she says. Rhonda trail has started something new in a place where traditions run deep.

A three-mile trip around the pond with plenty of bulbs to light the way towards a goal of $10,000 for Easter Seals Rehabilitation Center.

Mary Saum and a friend are dressed in tutu's, prepared to make a statement in this race. “It's fun, everybody comes out, everybody says they like it real well,” she says.

Trail says the race isn't so much about the money, though it is important. Rather, “it's about everybody being here and starting something neat and fun.”

There were nearly 300 runners in this inaugural “Light the Night,” and Trail hopes to make it bigger and better next year.

The glow from the lights hardly shine as bright as Rhonda's pride, because her baby came to life. And there's even more love shining from above. Her dad would have been 79 years-old this night.

“I'm estatic,” she says, “I'm a little bit emotional about it, it's a big deal.”

Fantasy of Lights will remain open in Garvin Park through January 1.

This present doesn't come wrapped with a bow and you won't find any under a tree. But you will see rewards in the strides of hundreds – making strides to be better.
