Making Slime: a New Craze Among Kids

For kids, it can be fascinating to create things but lately the thing for kids to make is slime. The gooey stuff that sticks to everything can be fun to play with. YouTube is flooded with videos on how to make it, but is it safe for young children?

"They love getting slime and getting it all over them,” said Pidder Padder Preschool Teacher Terry Lanham.

And getting it all over is just what the kids at Pidder Padder Preschool love to do.

"We made it out of apple scented shampoo and corn starch,” said Lanham.

Local health providers report the green slime is safe, but other slimes made with borax can be harmful if not made correctly.

Lanham said it's safe for her students. She has been making slime with kids for as long as she can remember but you wont find borax in her classroom.

"I don't like to use borax. It's poison so we stay away from borax,” said Lanham.

Most people use glue paired with some type of starch to create the perfect slime.

Kids of all ages are making it, like Heather Ricketts' daughter.

"She's nine. People older than her are making it. People younger are making it. I think it's just kind of the DIY era for these little girls to make stuff out of...different things," said Ricketts. "It's just good all around. It teaches them measuring, it teaches them math, it helps with developing textures, it helps with speech. They learn different words. The slime is gooey and cold."

Whether you're a preschooler or much older, right now slime is in.
