Meacham Country Hams Closes Its Doors

After more than eight decades feeding Union County and parts of western Kentucky, a family owned business is shutting down.

Meacham Hams announced it is closing operations this month.

For 84 years, the Meacham family cured, processed, and sold hams out of a building on their farm outside of Sturgis. But now, this era is coming to an end.

"It's been very good," says Rodman Meacham of Meacham Hams. "The business has been good to us."

For him, ending the family business his father, William, started in 1932 was tough.

"It's tough. it's something you worked at for many years," he said.

But a series of factors, including its remote location, economic conditions, and the lack of a successor to run the business, led to the closing, and the end of a county tradition of a Meacham ham on the dinner table during the holidays.

"It's sad," says Patty Wells of Poole in Union County. "It's a tradition. All of our kids have grown up, and our parents have grown up with Meachams. It's a tradition in Union County."

"We've had a lot of people call, sorry that we are closing, and we are too," Meacham adds.

Meacham Country Ham employed as many as 15 people, most during November and December, when more than half of their sales happened.  The family business won a lot of customers, and awards in its 84 years of curing and serving. Meacham says the remaining hams should be sold by the end of this month, but the memories of his customers will remain.

"Great appreciation for our customers and for all those who've helped us through the many years. We're going to miss them," Rodman says.

Meacham tells us he's not sure what he's going to do with the building where the business started, but the recipe will stay within the family.
