Message in a Bottle: Love Letter Found in Newburgh

A man who's been fishing near the Newburgh Lock and Dam for years found something Monday unlike anything he’d ever seen.

"Turn to look down to my left, found this bottle, had S.O.S in it, and I thought, well what the hell."

It reads:

S.O.S- son of sorrow

(King of pain)

I fell in love with the most beautiful woman in the world....

Signed by a man named Jim, to a woman named Delilah, all wrapped up in an empty Jim Beam bottle.

“Bewildering to me to actually open it up and see if there was someone's kind of heart felt plea for you, I guess apparently the love of his life,” said the fisherman, who chose to remain anonymous.

In the letter, Jim says he threw the bottle off the Lincoln Memorial Bridge in Louisville--hoping it would make it to its destination in Florida, where Delilah lives.

But just in case it didn't, he left both his and her phone number.

If you find this message in a bottle, call her and tell her how much I love her and want her. Or call me and let me know how far my bottle made it.

The bottle made it just about 140 miles down the Ohio River. We called Jim.

"Been a long time. Too long. I still love her though,” Jim said, surprised the message made it as far as it did.

Jim said he met Delilah in Daytona Beach, Florida, and they were on and off for a few years while he still lived in Floyd Knobs, Indiana. Ultimately, he said the distance made things too difficult.

The two fell out of contact completely, and Jim felt he was down to his last option.

"You know, I might as well send a message in a bottle, same thing, I don't know if it's ever seen, read, or anything, you know,” Jim said. “You know, anything's possible, man, you know I pray to God every day, but I mean, anything's possible, you know."

We wanted to fulfill Jim’s request, and see if there was still a chance for romance.

"Please leave your message for…"

No luck.

For now love waits, but the man who found the message has some advice.

"I would suggest Crown Royal and a bigger bottle, and move on to the next lady if you can't contact with Delilah."
