No Parade No Problem: Jackie Young Back in Princeton

It's 'Jackie Young Day' in Princeton, but no party, and that's cool by her

A welcome home where everyone knows your name, but no one knows you're there.

Friday in Gibson County comes without much attention. If you ask the lady in green with ‘Irish’ on her chest, that's just the way she likes it.

Quite the position for a woman like the all-time scoring leader in Indiana high school basketball history.

“Jackie Young to the office please,” blurted across the PA system at Princeton Community High School. It’s her day, and the Lady Tigers superstar is back in town.

“She’s really good,” says 10 year-old Addison Anderson, “she's on our wall for records.”

Addison knows, Jackie is queen on most any day in Princeton, but especially this one. Jackie Young Day in the city. Mayor Brad Schmitt made it so this time last year.

“I want to follow her footsteps,” Addison says, “I play basketball and I think it's fun.”

This homecoming without parades and parties is just how the superstar likes it. She’s in town for a few days on spring break before the NCAA Tournament starts.

“It’s just nice to see everybody again and see kids out there working on their game,” Young says, watching above a pickup game in Princeton’s gym.

She's lived in the spotlight for years, and playing for Notre Dame hasn't changed a thing. The Irish are the second-ranked team in the country.

“We play in front of 9,000 fans every night,” she says, which is a little different than the home games she used to play. “Red Nation always supported me and now I'm up there with Irish fans supporting me.”

Sometimes it's nice to fly under the radar -- or under a pair of scissors.

“We’re going to have practice and stuff but we don't have school,” she tells her hair dresser. Likely a rare time off the court where she can unwind like the rest of us.

It’s back to the roots, and Jackie is humble and hungry for more.

To think, it all started five years ago with a young girl's dream to be the best. “It’s always nice to come back home,” says Young.

She's grown up now. But the dream never will.
