One Dead, Three Hurt in Shooting at American Legion Parking Lot

They opened their doors to the public, now one person is dead and three people are hurt after a shooting in the parking lot of the American Legion in downtown Evansville.

Lloyd Denton, Jr. with the American Legion says they were holding an event for both members and non-members Saturday night.

Before Denton left, he says he cleared a group of about 20 people from the parking lot at around 1: 15 a.m. Sunday. Denton says most of the people in the parking lot were not members of the American Legion.

This isn’t the first time somebody has brought a gun to the area. Denton says a couple of weeks ago, a man with an AK-47 was caught in the area.

Post Commander William VanHooks says Sunday’s incident did not involve their members and there are security cameras in the parking lot and signs on the building that say no firearms allowed.

"It's really disturbing because of the face that we open the place to non-members to have an opportunity to rub elbows with veterans and family members to get a better understanding of what we're about."

VanHooks says they will be reviewing their by-laws to possibly make changes to try and prevent something like this from happening again.

Vanderburgh County Coroner Steve Lockyear says Anthony Blaylock died around 3 a.m. Sunday. No other names in the shooting have been released. Evansville Police are investigating the shooting incident.
