Kentucky coal company could lay off dozens of workers

Armstrong Coal anticipates idling their surface mine located in Ohio County

Over 100 Kentucky workers could soon be out of a job.

Armstrong Coal Company anticipates idling the Equality surface mine located in Ohio County.

Armstrong currently employs 61 workers at the mine and 49 employees at the Armstrong Prep & Dock facility.

Armstrong coal officials say these actions are because of market overproduction and a sustained depression in demand for high sulfur thermal coal produced by the Equality surface mine.

The company expects these layoffs to take place between December 8 and December 22.

Armstrong says the layoffs will be permanent.
