OPD: Man Shot and Killed During Argument

Update

Owensboro Police are now releasing the names of two men they say were involved in a verbal altercation which escalated to a shooting.

Police say 36-year-old Jerard A. Fountain died due to a gunshot wound to the chest.

Police say 24-year-old Preston T. Williams is listed in serious condition due to a gunshot wound to the abdomen.

"I was inside playing with my daughter. I got off work a few moments earlier when the shots rang out.," says Steven Johnson says he didn't hear the argument, but heard the shots on sycamore street.

"I saw a lot of commotion going on behind me," he recalled.

"When we arrived on scene, there were several people there, whether they were witnesses or not," says Officer Michael Hathaway of the Owensboro Police Dept.

Police say both Fountain and Williams shot each other once after the two started arguing. Owensboro Police say Fountain was killed here on Sycamore Street after the incident, and Williams was found here on Maple Street, a block away from the shooting scene, where he was taken to the hospital.

Fountain was shot once in the upper chest. Williams was shot once in the abdomen.

"I was worried because I live with my wife and my daughter," Johnson says. "It kind of scared me too because I didn't know what was happening."

Police recovered at least one of the handguns used at the scene. Detectives still must interview Williams and others about the incident. Investigators aren't exactly sure yet what they were arguing over. No charges have been filed against anyone as of Monday afternoon.

"We have had incidents in Owensboro in the past where gunshots, but very unfortunate that with this instant we had two people struck," says Ofc. Hathaway.
