Plans for new Owensboro middle school now on hold

The plans for a new middle school in Owensboro are now on hold due to the ongoing pension crisis in Kentucky.

Owensboro Public School Superintendent Nick Brake said OPS is postponing work on an Innovation Middle School modeled after the Owensboro Innovation Academy.

The school was supposed to open next fall.

Brake said the unknown costs of proposed pension fixes unveiled by Kentucky Governor Matt Bevin (R) last month could hurt OPS's ability to pay for a new school.

“We certainly don't want to be making commitments on where we would hold that academy, or other things that we would have to come up with to make that program as effective as our other Innovation program – knowing we have some of those unknowns out there,” said Brake.

Brake also said he hopes the planned middle school will open in the fall of 2019.
