Police Arrest Hitchhiker Reportedly Armed Near Whitesville

Daviess County Sheriff's deputies are searching the eastern part of the county near Whitesville for a man reportedly armed with a knife.

Sheriff Keith Cain says a hitchhiker was picked up east of Owensboro Thursday morning. The driver of the vehicle told the sheriff's department the hitchhiker requested to be taken to the county line.

Once the driver got to the county line, he said the hitchhiker pulled a knife and demanded to be taken all the way to Louisville.

The sheriff's department said the man pulled a large knife on the driver before getting out of the vehicle.

Kentucky State Police troopers and deputies with Daviess County Sheriff's Department searched for nearly an hour before finding the man near the Dollar General in Whitesville.

Law enforcement did not release the man's identity, but did confirm that he had been taken into custody.

Whitesville Trinity High School was instructed to go on lockdown, according to the sheriff's department.

Whitesville Elementary School did not allow anyone in or out of the building during the search. DCPS confirmed that all students are safe and secure.
