Rain Keeps Boats Out of Water First Day of Hydrofest

Boats are made for water, whether its under, or falling on top of the boat, but at Evansville's Hydrofest Friday, the hydroplane boats did not see the water at all on the weekends first day.

Hydrofest was forced to cancel Friday nights concert featuring the Cold Stares and CALABASH as well as all test course runs for hydroplane racers due to weather.

Ed Preston, a hydroplane driver says its not the rain, but the wind that is of concern for racers and their teams.

Preston said, “we can race in the rain for a little bit again, it does tend to get your driving suit wet, and when you get in the cockpit it does steam up a little bit because we don't have defrosters, so that can be a pretty big problem but we can do it. But the wind that we've got going on right now is not something we can race in. These boats are really flighty, so if you get a big gust of wind when you're moving along at 150 miles per hour it can blow over ,and that's not a good situation at all.”

Preston says test runs are helpful, but not essential to his racing team, as they've raced many different courses over the years, and with the cancellation, drivers will be given a chance to run through the course before races start Saturday morning.

Even with Friday's cancellations, race officials say they don't think the weather will set them back when it comes to the rest of the weekend.

Race Director Randy Lientz said, “Today is a big day of preparation of moving the boats into the pits, getting out all the tools and everything out, setting up the race course with all the course markers, setting up the timing and electronic equipment to be able to record speed.
All preparations are moving right along, people may be getting a little wet, but they're working right on through it .”

Lientz says his team does not forsee weather being an issue Saturday and Sunday when the races start, but will be willing to adjust racing schedules accordingly.
