Re-enactors Take Pride in 'Newburgh Remembers'

"You can't understand history from a book. You have to go out and live it. You have to understand it. You have to see it, you have to hear it,” Civil War re-enactor Alex Baity said Saturday.

The dozens of people who flocked to Newburgh's riverside for Newburgh Remembers certainly did hear it, and they were so close, they could smell the gunpowder too. Rest assured, no actual ammunition was used, but the re-enactors sold it the best they could

"I'm a first lieutenant,” Paul Wagner said.

"So, I play a union who was captured and forced to change sides,” Isaac Kebortz said.

You couldn't ask for a better setting than Newburgh, which was host to the first confrontation between Confederate and Union forces in Indiana.

As ‘Stovepipe’ Johnson led his rebels into a gun raid, Union soldiers tried with all their might to push them back. For the people bringing the page of history to life, the looks on audience members’ faces is worth the sweat.

"It’s fun to teach people about history, recreate it, and also just sort of help people to continue on tradition, knowing what the truth was about it, not letting people just make things up, which seems to be quite popular nowadays,” Kebortz said.

There's also opportunities to learn about less violent things, like spinning yarn, or taking a picture with Abraham Lincoln.

"Makes you feel good inside. Maybe spur some interest and maybe later on in life they'll learn more about it if they want to,” Danny Hutchinson said.
