Record Number of People Expected to Travel this Memorial Day Weekend

According to AAA,  39.3 million people are expected to travel this Memorial Day weekend, nearly one million more than last year, and 88% of those people are expected to drive.

Before the barbecue, watermelon, and the lake, this holiday weekend you have to learn to go with the flow of a different kind.

Even the early birds left without a worm this major travel weekend, as some drivers say they hit traffic before they even got out of town.

Even where its usually quiet, there was more than one kind of stream cutting through this weekend with 63 people checking into Audobon State Park's campgrounds just on Friday.

The entire campground, give or take five or six tent spots, booked ahead of time.

For one camper who got to the site a week early, after booking his spot a year in advance, he got to spend one of the biggest  travel days of the year with his grandkids instead of the car in front of him's bumper.

"I came a little bit early just because I could, but avoiding the traffic is a good thing because traffic is really heavy through here in Henderson,” said Stephen Lynch, a camper from Patoka, "the campground is full this weekend, the campground is always full on Memorial Day and Fourth of July so it makes it nice to be here and have a spot."

Lynch said, "I just like the solitude- which doesn't seem like solitude with all these people out here, but nonetheless it is."

According to AAA, this is the most people to take their Memorial Day Weekend plans on the road in more than a decade.
