Red Cross opens new 'blood room'

A special ribbon-cutting took place Thursday morning at the American Red Cross on Stockwell Rd.

The ceremony marked the opening of the new blood room, which brings both the blood collection and humanitarian operations under one roof.

Additional staff, equipment, and the location will allow the chapter to expand blood donation, hours, and capacity.

Red Cross Director of Collections Matthew Carver said, "It's an opportunity for us to come together, show a unifed front to our community, allow our donors -- both blood and humanitarian chapter donors – to come into the one-stop shop and be able to do what they need to do and interact with us in a positive way.”

The expanded donation hours are now Tuesday-Saturday.

Red Cross staff said the need for blood has been on the rise.

The new collection room will help meet that demand.
