Red Flag Day Offers Relief Indoors

Cold air and water on a sweltering day for people with nowhere else to go

Summer is a time for many to relax, but for others the sweltering heat can be too much to handle.

Evansville Rescue Mission offers shelter, as the city tops 90 degrees Friday for the hottest day of the year.

A red flag day outside means free air conditioning and water inside.

“We know not everybody has access to conventional cooling methods, so we open our shelter up for that purpose,” says Evansville Rescue Mission manager, Joshua Nichols.

Nichols understands there are people in the community who don't have access to air conditioning, a pool, or even water.

Any man can come inside while the red flag flies.

Anyone else is welcome for three meals a day.

Timothy Fitzgerald takes advantage of it, cooling down indoors.

“With the red flag out, people are allowed to come in and get some cold water and air conditioning,” he says.

The rescue mission feeds 400 a day and offers water to anyone who needs it, and with the temperatures are expected to climb this weekend, the Rescue Mission is prepared to stay busy.

“We imagine our numbers will be very high,” Nichols says.

The Rescue Mission is looking for donations of socks, shirts, personal hygiene products, and lots of water.
